You’ve been there. You head to the dentist thinking you’ll have a clean bill of health and high praise for you oral hygiene, only to find out you have gum disease. But have no worry, treating gum disease isn’t especially difficult. In fact, there are numerous home remedies for gum disease you can utilize right here.

Also called periodontal disease, gum disease affects more than half of all Americans age 30 and older – so at least you aren’t alone. But you don’t really have to suffer from bleeding, swollen, irritated gums; there are certainly other options when it comes to invasive dental treatments meant to treat periodontal disease (or toxic fluoride treatments).

Natural Home Remedies for Gum Disease

Here are 7 natural home remedies for gum disease that will make your dentists’ head spin at your next appointment:

  • 1. Oil Pulling – This method has been raved about not only for curing swollen, red gums, but even reversing gum disease with bone loss. Oil pulling does just what the name infers – it ‘pulls’ toxins right out of your mouth and gums. It removes plaque build up and has been studied in several triple-blind studies to be very effective. Just be sure to use 100% organic oil – sesame, olive, or coconut is best – because you wouldn’t want to be swishing pesticide-laden oils around in your moth for several minutes at a time. Check out more oil pulling benefits here.
  • 2. Sage Leaf Decoction – This is an old folk remedy for gingivitis and gum disease. All you need to do is boil around 50 fresh organic sage leaves in some distilled water and then gargle the decoction several times a day as well as use it like a mouthwash. You can also make a sage tea and drink it throughout the day. Sage has huge amounts of antioxidants and it also contains it anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.
  • 3. Garlic and Turmeric Paste – Use garlic cloves on irritated gums, or simply make a garlic & turmeric paste to use like toothpaste, then rinse after it has been in your mouth for several minutes. Both of these naturally-occurring foods are full of antibacterial properties, and turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory agent.
  • 4. Neem – This plant is used in India for a thousand different healing remedies; among them is better dental health. You can use neem in a mouthwash, or even find neem toothpaste. It has both antimicrobial and antifungal properties. In one study involving three different groups with gum disease: one using traditional mouthwash, one treated with neem gel, and the last a placebo, the neem group had the best outcome.

  • 5. Mustard Oil – This method has been used for hundreds of years to combat bad dental hygiene. It destroys bacteria in the mouth and heals the gums very fast. It also has pain-reducing qualities along with being anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.
  • 6. Aloe Vera Gel – Best when it comes straight form the plant, aloe vera is a great anti-inflammatory that is especially helpful if your gums are red and inflamed.
  • 7. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Not only do fruits and vegetables with skins help clean the teeth, but the antioxidants in both fruits and vegetables also prevent plaque build up in the mouth.

The use of natural herbal remedies which use essential oils in treating periodontal disease is popular in alternative medicine circles and works very well.
Natural Herbal Gum Disease Remedy (from Kerstin’s Nature Products) is a powerful combination of sweet almond oil and some of the finest essential plant oils, designed specifically to maximize tooth and gum health.
It can be applied directly or diluted with some olive oil to the gums or toothache or you can add a drop or two of the remedy on your toothbrush on top of the toothpaste before brushing. This will help inflamed and irritated gums and prevent gum disease. You also can put one or two drops to a cotton ball and dab your gums.

I always have to laugh when I see statements like this. The writer must be aware that organic farming uses pesticides too. In fact, the organic pesticides are actually more dangerous to humans than the ones used in indutrial farming (which are tailored to affect only certain insects).

What about the GMOs in the industrial farming? I always try to avoid them.

Also what do we do with the mustard oil? Do we gargle, like the oil pulling? And if so, for how long?

how do we make the garlic and tumeric paste? The article wasn’t very thorough in explaining, should it be raw, or cooked? Thanks!

I have garlic and turmeric paste at hand just in case I need them! I’m trying to teach my daughter the importance of brushing to make sure her gums stay in good health. We’re going to take her in to get her teeth checked soon so we will see if the turmeric and garlic will be needed.

When I was stationed in Germany in the sixties, I developed gingivitis. My gums shrank and turned white, in addition to bleeding. My bad breath was unbelievable. I reported sick and the camp MO informed me that all my teeth would have to be extracted. When I told the landlady at my billet, she advised me to purchase a brand of toothpaste which contained Kastanien (horse chestnut) extract. It worked. I am now 80 and still have most of my teeth. Sadly, I don’t think this brand is now available, possibly banned, as were iodine and melatonin, by the EU (I am in the UK) Brussels appears to be preventing the sale of natural remedies throughout Europe.

It’s over 40 years ago, now, but it didn’t take too long. Sorry I can’t be more explicit. All I can say is that it was a success.

Try a change in diet–eliminate as much sugar as possible and lower your carb intake–a paleo/primal diet. That helped me quite a bit. I learned the information from marksdailyapple (dot) com.

I also make my own toothpaste with extra virgin organic coconut oil, baking soda, peppermint and clove essential oils, and I use a sonicare toothbrush. This has helped heal the pockets where all the junk collects and erodes my gums. It’s not immediate, but it seems to work for me.

Yes, unfortunately, I did as well. I could eat chocolate all day, every day! I switched to dark chocolate with much lower sugar content, and it has helped.

    1. Add lipo-spheric vitamin c to your diet ASAP. It’ll cost about a dollar a day. Do it anyway. Gingivitis is potentially a very serious infection. You need to be very serious about shutting it down.
    2. Use a water pick every night.
These two things will make a big difference.

My gum pockets have been a 2 or worse for many years. I started inhaling a 3.5% food grade hydrogen peroxide mist for my lungs (COPD) a few months ago. I was as surprised as my dentist when I had my teeth cleaned, my gum pockets were upgraded to 1 for the first time in 30 years or so. The only difference that could have caused this change is the peroxide.

Hydrogen Peroxide diluted and used daily in a Water Pick will clear up just about anything. Keep yourself at or above 4 grams of vitamin C per day as well.

I agree about the hydrogen peroxide. I switched to a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash about 5 months ago. It is the most effective mouthwash I have ever used.

If you have silver amalgam fillings, please research using hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. I have been using it for several years with great results…until I started getting a strange metallic taste in my mouth. Researched what might cause that and found that H2O2 can release mercury vapors from silver amalgam fillings, which I have. So I’ve given it up until I can afford to get those fillings removed, just in case.

You forgot to mention flossing…! I think it’s a fundamental remedy and preventive measure.

Flossing always made my gums worse and bleed and swollen. I can’t get the floss in the back of my mouth. I just use the floss to get food out if I feel it. But not as a regular bass.
