16 Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms – Signs of Low Magnesium Levels

Healthy Living
You may know what magnesium is, but do you know how important the mineral can be for your health? Magnesium is involved with over 300 metabolic processes in our bodies, leading to the mineral being called the ‘master mineral’. So what exactly does it mean to have a magnesium deficiency, and what are some magnesium deficiency symptoms?
Why Supplementing with Magnesium is a Good Idea
Firstly, magnesium is necessary for the proper transportation of calcium across cell membranes. Why? Calcium needs other nutrients that help get calcium into bone matter. Those other nutrients are silica, vitamin D, vitamin K, and, you guessed it – magnesium. Excessive calcium intake has been linked to heart health issues by staying in the blood long enough to calcify into arterial plaque.
Minerals are more important than vitamins, which struggle actually struggle without minerals. Thanks to modern monoculture farming methods that rely heavily on using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides that are absorbed into the soil, out topsoil has been heavily depleted of its mineral content.
The master mineral magnesium is missing from most of our topsoil, leaving the vast majority, perhaps 80%, with a failure to meet even the USDA’s recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 240 to 420 millgrams (based on age). It’s important to note that government RDAs are known to be well below optimum levels. Many experts think our magnesium levels should be twice the amount.
While observing bodily signs can help, you may want to have some tests administered in the end to test whether or not you’re deficient in magnesium. Serum or blood level measurements are usually inadequate because magnesium operates on a cellular level and accumulates in organ and nerve tissue. So even good results with blood testing are very often deceptive, leaving one with a magnesium deficiency. One effective test developed for use by health professionals is the Exa Test™.
If testing is unavailable, put your symptom watch hat on. There are many symptoms of magnesium deficiency that relate to cardiovascular, heart, neurological, and muscular dysfunction and disease.
These various magnesium deficiency symptoms are numerous because of the mineral’s diverse role in so many different cellular metabolic functions.
16 Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms
As mentioned, magnesium is a mineral responsible for numerous bodily processes. An anti-inflammatory mineral offering protection against illnesses like arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, magnesium has been used to remedy problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory issues, and much more. But as you may suspect, just as upping magnesium intake can solve problems, a magnesium deficiency could lead to many of those same issues and much more.
Here are 16 signs of a magnesium deficiency.
- Calcium deficiency
- Poor heart health
- Weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Tremors
- Nausea
- Anxiety
- High blood pressure
- Type II diabetes
- Respiratory issues
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Potassium deficiency
- Difficulty swallowing
- Poor memory
- Confusion
It’s important to note that while these are symptoms of a magnesium deficiency, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are definitely deficient in magnesium if you experience the above issues.
How to Safely Supplement Magnesium
It’s almost impossible to overdose magnesium by supplementing, but consuming too much magnesium is still not a great idea. Too much of the mineral could lead to some side effects like irregular heartbeat or slowed breathing. Similar to oral ascorbic acid C, there is a bowel tolerance threshold that brings on diarrhea if exceeded. Not all magnesium supplements are easily absorbed, either.
You can find inexpensive products that feature magnesium citrate, which is among the most readily absorbed forms of magnesium supplements.
You can also apply transdermal magnesium chloride topically to be absorbed internally through the skin. Magnesium chloride is also known as magnesium oil, though not really an oil. It’s a briny solution from ancient sea beds. It is available through various online sources. Google magnesium oil products.
If you don’t want to supplement and simply want to acquire magnesium through food sources, here are a few foods that can relieve you of any magnesium deficiency symptoms:
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sunflower seeds
- Soybeans
- Black beans
- Cashews
- Spinach
- Squash
- Sesame seeds
- Almonds
- Okra

Magnesium is definitely a help with anxiety issues. I’m living proof of that! When I start getting really bad anxiety I take a 250mg in the a.m. and a 250mg just prior to bedtime and in a few days my high anxiety levels start to recede.
And that has a good reason. The soybeans themselves contain isoflavones and phytoestrogens. Which mess up the hormone system of a human if consumed (too much). Therefor fermentation is required to remove most of those substances.
Save the criticism, use the information.
Did a child write this? A child that failed every English class they ever took? Proofread your stuff before posting! You could have good info here but many people will discount it when they see it strewn with grammatical errors.
Not on the list is BPH… a prostate condition causing difficult and incomplete urination… magnesium is a GREAT solution to this problem… a problem that effects a huge number of men over 50!!!
Add raw pumpkin seed oil and flaxseed meal… and you will notice a BIG improvement!!
Are those really our main sources of magnesium? Who really eats those things on a daily basis. No wonder 80% of the population is deficient.
I drink Neuro Sleep its a supplement with l theanine, melatonin and magnesium. I have many deficiency symptoms. It helps me relax and fall asleep in 20 minutes( half a bottle). I recommend to anyone who has anxiety, jittery or leg cramps with insomnia.
Most people who eat lots of dark green leafy veggies get lots of calcium. If one still gets osteoporosis, then it’s probably because complementary nutrients are missing, esp. vit D, mag, and vit K2. It’s been decades since I consumed any dairy and my bones rival those of a teenager.
The theory behind how you can’t overdose is that too much will exceed bowel tolerance and you’ll end up with loose stool. Too much of THAT and you’ll end up with mineral deficiency symptoms like arrhythmia. Best opt for a blend of formulas ending in “..ate”. Avoid mag oxide unless you have too much money. If that’s the case, there are better charities. Need more info? Read Dr. Carolyn Dean’s research. She is the Queen of Mag!
I’m learning so much from the comment section of this article. Thank you everyone for sharing.
Migraines are not on the list and they are caused by magnesium deficiency.
I like the article and agree that Mg deficiency is a real issue, but the comment that “The master mineral magnesium is missing from most of our topsoil” is really misleading. Yes, the crops grown using synthetic nitrogen fertilizers can be and often are deficient in MANY minerals. But if the soil does not have sufficient Mg then the plants will simply not grow. The two most important minerals in the soil are calcium (65% of CEC) and magnesium (15% of CEC). CEC is cation exchange capacity or the total amount of positively charged minerals the soil will hold. Not to get too technical but just realize that without Mg you won’t have to worry about eating deficient food because there won’t be any.
That being said, soils LOW in the necessary Mg will produce some fruit, but it won’t be a bumper crop by any means and yes, it can be deficient in Mg. As mentioned in other articles, grow your own food, taking special care to use organic fertilizers that contain the full spectrum of plant available minerals. Eat lots of GREEN veggies from fully mineralized soils. This is the ONE way you can get the Mg you need without running the risk of mercury contamination by consuming sea fish.
If it sounds like I’m passionate AND informed about this topic, it’s because I am. I founded an organic fertilizer company, MightyGrow Organics, with the specific purpose in mind to give organic growers the tools needed to grow nutrient dense food. I also advocate bio-fortification of garden veggies by making certain ALL the minerals the plants can take up are present in the soil.
One of the ways that Round-Up herbicide works is to prevent the plant from taking in mg, causing the plant to die. Eating gmo crops or those doused with RR/glyphosate pre-harvest certainly isn’t going to help one’s mg deficiency problem!
Make sure you are taking a good quality supplement. You get what you pay for !!!
How much and what kind did u take
Traditional soy foods are ok like tempeh, tofu and natto. Phyto estrogen is exactly what it is, phyto. It will not imbalance hormones because the hormone is of another kingdom. If you want to avoid hormone foods, then stop ingesting dairy because it has naturally occurring hormones which promote cancer especially breast cancer. Isolated soy is not good, like fake meats and powders because it is a fragmented nutrient which is toxic in high amounts. Do your research please!
Traditional soy foods aren’t necessarily ok. Whitney, do your research please!
tempeh and natto are fermented, so ok. Tofu is soy curd, not fermented and not healthful.
Chem trails deliver lots of Aluminum as do vaccines. Deletes the body of magnesium. Check it put. Watch the skies. http://youtu.be/jf0khstYDLA
Un-sulphured Raw Organic Blackstrap Molasses is magnesium rich and is an excellent food source.
Halibut is also a good source but one of the best is 100g a bar of dark chocolate (at least 85% is best). Its so rich I think that people who “crave” chocolate are actually craving the magnesium so often deficient in most diets. Go check the numbers on NutritionData, don’t take my word for it.
This surely does work but it should be noted that anyone with kidney issues, obviously anyone with diabetes should probably not use this treatment. I have yet to see Epsom Salts that don’t show this warning on the label. Just so nobody missed the warning or tells anyone who uses this treatment. But in general, Epsom Salts are wonderful.
Again, see Dr. Dean’s research. Mg is needed by kidney pts, too. It’s the other minerals; potassium, sodium and phosphates that are the problem.
Even non GMO soy is not good, it negatively affects the thyroid, and can suppress firtility, because it is a phyto-estrogen mimicking substence. We have been sold a bunch of lies about soy being healthy, when it is not.
My understanding is that phytoestrogens in soy are very weak so don’t cause problems but because they latch onto and occupy estrogen receptor sites they block estrogen and xenoestrogens (plastics etc). So it would appear if this is true, that soy is protective. Personally I don’t touch it myself but this theory makes sense as so many cultures seem to do well on soy based diets.
“many”? Of the pathetically few that I know of, they eat fermented soy only. Phytic acid in beans can be problematic unless they under go fermentation.
Iodine
My husband is allergic to shrimp, I hear it’s the iodine. Is that the same type of iodine?
Its actually really rare to be allergic to iodine. I’m in my mid 30’s and have thought that my whole life. I found out I was iodine deficient and NOT allergic to iodine. I am allergic to shellfish and have always been fearful of iodine. Found out its a common fear that the med field propagates. I’m iodine sensitive, not allergic and take it orally.
Iodine without sufficient selenium can wreck havoc for hashimoto pts. Get levels of Se up first, THEN add in I.
FANTASTIC COMMENT! Thank you for reminding all of us of this great, easy-to-find product!
Chocolate should be on the list. It is one of the HIGHEST food sources of magnesium with just one ounce containing 95 mg. or 24% of the recommended MINIMUM amount. I use magnesium oil to absorb magnesium transdermally (through the skin). It works better than Epsom salts, although both are very helpful and Epsom salts contains much needed sulfur. There are several really good forums on Facebook on Thyroid problems and associated nutritional deficiencies such as iodine-iodide, selenium, magnesium, boron, zinc, etc. I belong to 2 of them. One is ‘Iodine Support Group’, the other simply ‘Iodine’. Some very experienced people are administrators on both pages and help us in understanding and turning around the debilitating problems caused by imbalances in thyroid and adrenals, which often have lack of selenium as a probable root cause. Thyroid and adrenals work hand-in-hand, along with hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, DHEA and testosterone which are directly tied to thyroid and adrenal function.
I would actually steal chocolate from my children, I crave it that much when suffering with fatigue & foggy head.. have just started magnesium in the last two days so feeling hopefull.. doc will only give anti depressants..I take but they gradually stop working, probably as I’m not depressed. Thank u for this information x
My mom used to buy a pound a week “for medicinal purposes”. Once she got her mg levels up she was able to quit the chocolate on her own, cold turkey.
What brand and dose of mafgnesium did you take? I am thinking about taking some magnesium because I have internal trembling and terrible anxiety. I am a 60 year old female.
Woman’s World happens to have a Dr. Oz article about Magnesium this week. He suggests 400 mg. BUT. you SHOULD check with your Dr. FIRST. I did get some 250 mg, Sundown brand. Only on day 3. Am trying to lose weight and regain a better memory. BUT also have made an appt. with my Dr.
Good luck.
Dr. Oz is an a**hole. He gave Piers Morgan
a flu shot right on television, promising it
was completely safe. Next day Morgan
came down with the worst case of flu he
ever had. Stay away from flu shots too!
you realize if he “came down with it” the next day, that means he already had the flu before the shot, aka, he got his shot too late. The flu takes time to develop symptoms in the body. And a flu shot isn’t effective immediately. He probably was unlucky because his body started fighting the original flu, and then the dead flu cells on top of it from the shot. That’s just bad luck, not bad science.
Most likely that’s what happened. Also, he may have been infected by another common cold virus and not influenza. People don’t understand the difference and call everything the flu. But there are hundreds of common cold viruses. What shocks me that there are even medical professionals that are so ignorant that the advise against the flu shots. I guess they skipped their immunology and infectious disease lectures.
DocT, Thanks for your comment and we should do more research and take better care of ourselves. I just wanted to share what God did for me in 1985 after a motorcycle wreck and brain surgery. They did not think I would make it through surgery. America needs to get back to God, seeing as He made us and America!!!
Now you want to talk about the LORDS love for us being incomprehensible. When I was lost
(I thought I knew the LORD but I was wrong)
I was on drugs almost every day and at about once a week I would commit fornication. i am Not proud
of any of this. This went on for four and one half years. Then I had my accident. I went 50′ head over heels
down a curb and received 3 fractures to my skull and was unrecognizable to my Mom. I don’t think it would
have happened if i had not been on drugs because i would have been thinking better, maybe i was only 23.
But it did happen. Isaiah 41:10 He will hold us up with His Right hand of Rightoueness!
Then the LORD went to work on me. About three weeks after having brain surgery something else happened.
Early one morning i was laying in bed in the hospital looking out the door of my room and the LORD
took me out of my body. i saw myself laying in bed and then the LORD showed me three very important
things. First: all I saw was fire and I was there Alive, the death of hell fire then it was to late. Second:
I saw myself in a vegetative state, Last: I saw everything i had done wrong since I was old enough to know better.
Then I saw myself back in bed and the LORD told me to go back. I bent over putting my hands on my knees, made in There image,
taking a good look down. Because of His Love, Warmth, Peace, Joy and Understanding I felt there I had no
desire to go back. I turned and pointing my finger down and looked at the Spirit behind me and said I’m
not going I know what it’s like and I’m not going. Then I stood up crossed my arms and would not look
down because I was not going back. And HE knew I had no desire to go back. Being a spirit in the spirit
realm I had the will to stay, but GOD is the all powerfull one. His Will not my will. The next thing I felt was
HIS hand on my back physically HE pushed me back into my body. I am glad HE did so now I can serve HIM
like I should have been doing from the start !!! HE gave me a second opportunity. There I was back in bed,
looking out the door of my room again where I was when HE took me. The key here is understand because
HE let me understand what HE had shown me. Before this had happened I did not know i was engaged, where I was or what
had happened to me. Through HIS grace he let me see and understand. I laid there and put it all in perspective.
I looked up and said “Thank you LORD JESUS” and inside I was asking the LORD into my life, my Spirit was crying out.
When I had finished speaking the HOLY SPIRIT filled me. Immediately it started from the bottom of my feet and filled
me up 10 to 20 inches outside of my body. Now I’m on a high that just doesn’t quit. through all that a
prayer was answered. My Mothers prayer, GOD bless her, she had prayed, before the wreck LORD please help my son and if he
must learn a lesson please let it be an easy one. And I learned through GOD’s Grace and it was easy thanks
to JESUS for HE paid the price, took on His creations Sin, that none of us could pay. So that we could know Redemtion and walk in
health and have a more abundant life. There’s nothing else to say except, Thank you LORD JESUS for HE has
already set us free if only we would ask HIM into our lives and let HIM work in us as only HE can.
Words cannot express what the LORD has done for me, but I pray that through your hearts the LORD will
show you what HE can and will do for all of us, If only you ask!!!
GOD said HE would give us what we needed and when we needed it and how much of it we needed then,
if only we would ask HIM.
GOD looks at what we can be not at what we are. How many times do we just look at what people are and
judge them, not looking at what they could be with a little help—– THINK ABOUT IT !!
If you know anyone dealing with Cancer, M.S., diabetes, Eqzema, psoriasis or Arthritis. Do a search for
“Budwig diet” it’s a vegetarian diet with flaxseed, flaxseed oil & cottage cheese. Meat Moderately has
worked for one lady, just sharing what I hear. Oh MD Anderson uses it and God let me meet two ladies who
have done the diet and one no longer needs her insulin, other had eczema in her spine could not walk,
I met her at Home Depot where she was working/walking Praise the Lord !!! Share “Budwig Diet”
I have had a flu shot once. Was sick for a week with absolute lethargy. Never again. It is a poison.
Same here. 1996 got a flu shot for the first time in my life (I was 25.) got the shot the first week of November, 6 weeks later just before Xmas I was so sick I literally had to fall out of my bed and crawl like a baby to get to the bathroom. Felt like I was dying. Most sick I’ve ever been.
18 years later, I’m now 43. Haven’t had a flu shot since. Haven’t had the flu since.
Never again.
I get the flu shot every year…. I haven’t had the flu for 10 years now. I use to get the flu once a year.
think about it, there is no tracking of the flu they give you and if you never got the flu- so why take it?
there are thousands of flu types and you think a lab can create the perfect one?
absolutely not, its a money maker and who knows what toxins are in that shot.
amazed that food industry has to list chemicals but big pharma does not?
look up experiments on humans approved by government, you’ll never get a flu shot again.
Morgan is an ass
Goodness, you people are ignorant AND uneducated. You can’t get the flu from the shot because the shot is inactivated flu virus. For you simpletons, it’s dead, killed, fried, whatever. It CANNOT cause the flu. In case you have not noticed, many really bad diseases such as the whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, are rare these days, because of vaccinations. You people should simply sit down and listen because you are not qualified to speak up. Why are we even trying to save you people from yourself?
Had a flu shot in 1996 also and had the worst reaction possible. My allergist told me it was because my worst allergy is to eggs. Flu vaccines are grown in eggs and when they inject you with the flu shot you can have a really bad reaction.
DocT you are ignorant – many people have bad reactions to flu vaccine. Including me. Dead or not the virus in vaccine proves to be too much on top on some other latent issues many people have and are not aware of. What gives you the right to call people who experienced problems on their on skin ignorant?
You are ignorant.
Me thinks you are not even a dr. Mayhap a wannabe. If I recall, there isn’t anything in med school about vaccines other than “give them”. And yes, one can get might ill from any vaccine because the adjuvants are supposed to active the immune system and that’s from where most will get those sick symptoms.
Thank you Doc
Choosing to replace a healthy immune system for a vaccine is what simpletons do and those who promote vaccines without mentioning this fact.
BS i got flu after dead virus fluvacc and so did every other nurse
If you don’t think the flu shot gives you the flu, then why do so many people I know, myself included, that have taken it get horribly sick afterwards. When we don’t take it, we don’t get horribly sick with flu symptoms. What I do know is vaccinations are a weakened form of an illness. For the people I know, and myself that have weaker immune systems, and/ or asthma, bronchial issues, and other related lung issues, the flu shot makes us horribly sick. The people I know, and myself have weak immune systems that simply can’t tolerate the flu shot at all, regardless if you call it dead or not. I’ve met several strangers where I live that have said the same thing. Some may have been pre-infected with a flu or flu-like virus before they had their shot in the cold season, being they got sick so fast after the shot, but others got sick in the typical time flu takes to develop. I have Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Bronchial Asthma, a heart murmur, and allergies to several medications, on top of other health issues, most all caused by diagnosed cause of my non-hereditary multiple sclerosis, which is eco-poisoning from toxic waste dumped in rivers, getting through to the tap water my mom drank. Which is 1 of the only 2 ways you can get MS which is currently incurable. The other way you get MS is it being hereditary in your family, though it can skip a few generations. It’s not hereditary in my family. Since I’m patient Zero, if I have kids, I have a 50% chance of passing it on to them. After researching what the Dr. proved through numerous months of testing me for everything, finding the MS, I found out where the toxic waste came from. Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. No, this has nothing to do with the Lead poisoning Flint, MI, water. That’s a separate issue, and a totally different set of rivers not linked to the rivers connected to Midland, MI where Dow is. I found out that Dow has been dumping toxic waste pretty much since they opened in 1897, in Midland, MI, their headquarters. Now they are worldwide and have been poisoning the entire planet for decades. They are 1 of the top 3 worst polluters in the USA, and in the top ten in the world. 1 of the products the make is bleach, which they make in Midland, and other places. Bleach toxic waste causes dioxin poisoning, which is of course lethal, and also causes many illnesses from minor allergies, and skin issues all the way to several terminal illnesses like Multiple Sclerosis, many cancers, and more. Dow has been sued many times for their toxic waste dumping, chemical plant accidents, chemical spills, faulty breast implants, and numerous other grievous crimes against humanity. They have won every lawsuit except 1 in Central America over 10 years ago, that they have still never paid the people for and likely never will. Dow Chemical is BIG money, powerful, and PURE EVIL. They have been caught paying off judges, lawyers, and politicians to win their courtcases, yet never suffer punishment. 1 of their biggest and most tragic lawsuits was for them making and selling napalm and agent Orange to the US government for the Vietnam War, after all the other companies stopped making it and selling it saying it was a crime against humanity, and would no longer profit from the deaths of thousands of people both US and Vietnamese. The people that sued Dow for it were American soldiers, American people that worked in and lived near the chemical factories that made the napalm and agent orange, Vietnamese soldiers and citizens, and the Vietnamese Government, all included in a huge, very long lawsuit. You’d think with so many people together fighting Dow, that Dow would lose. Sadly the poor people infected by the napalm and agent orange, suing Dow, lost. The saddest thing about chemicals like Napalm, Agent Orange, and the dioxins that poisoned me is that they not only mutate the genes, and make Ill the person exposed to them, but since it mutates the genes, any kids the exposed people have, will have a 50% chance of inheriting the illness from their parent. So the number of people effected by the chemical poisoning grows exponentially every year. The people that made the decision to dump the toxic waste where I lived, are likely very old or dead now. I wish I could sue Dow and have them put on Death Row for crimes against humanity. They knew what effects the chemicals have on humans, and dumped the toxic waste anyway. They deserve the most horrible, torturous death possible for the torture and death from their toxic dumping they’ve done to murder millions of people worldwide. The only consolation I have is that they also live near the chemical plant headquarters they work at, so it’s a 50% chance they were effected by the toxic waste too. It shows how stupid and evil they are to make the ground water where they live toxic. I have been trying to find ways to change my diet, and household habits to live a chemical free life. It is very hard, since so many products have things in them I don’t know about, I’m so tired from the MS, and have limited money to buy the better products that always seem to cost more money when they shouldn’t. Even with coupons, eating healthier, and having safer household habits can be expensive. It’s a work in progress. I just thank God for the simple things that help a lot like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.
…poetic justice
do people who get a flu shot actually find out what’s in them? Mercury and aluminium will that regular shot getting into your brain will eventually give you dementia.
You’re dissing Oz because he gave what majority of drs give? BTW, Dr Oz CAN learn new stuff and has backtracked on a few topics, notably gmos.
Did it work? I have the same symptoms
A great read, I have 80% above symptoms. Thought I might have M.E!! I already have Asthma and Crohns! Started taking Magnesium today and feeling hopeful:)
Don’t forget the Vit D and Vit K2 (mk-7)! See Vitamin Research Council for more info.
, Nathan, Right on!!
To many folks are blindly, ignorantly consuming soy foods without any comprehension about GMO’s (esp. where soy is concerned) & how/why fermented soy is acceptable but otherwise ought not be consumed. Glad to see someone else has knowledge about the realities of soy. Spread the word!
I can’t take any form of mag except in foods. It gives me the runs, so much I am always ready for a colonoscopy!
Check your Vit D and Selenium – often low with Thyroid problems.
Test your progesterone levels…the thyroid and progesterone can affect each other…in fact, many times infertile people are often low thyroid, and low in progesterone too.
Thanks for this! Another way is to mix some Epsom Salts with water and to put it into a spray bottle and then to spray it on the bare skin.
Really? This works for a deficiency?
Yes, oral, or transdermal (through skin absorption) magnesium is helpful. Any form you can get helps. And it needs to be a daily routine. If you have a Mag. deficiency it is important to keep supplementing in order to outweigh the loss.
Least anybody misinterpret what you wrote: Epsom Salts should only be used EXTERNALLY unless under strict medical supervision. Keep it topical.
Absolutely which is why you should read the ingredient labels on your lotions and makeup carefully! Anything you put on you skin that is “absorbed” ends up inside your body 😉 A good brand coconut oil makes an excellent moisturizer in place of all that other crap full of chemicals!
If you take 5000 mg of it, it’s toxicity, not really an overdose, it’s better to have the maximum amount recommended like no more than 500 mg a day.
Please help me find these products in the Colorado Springs area. I have a business and can buy at wholesale prices… i would rather buy the ingredients that are grown organically grown. in this elevation….
I am a type 2 diabetic..am 58 yrs of age and female. On 8/30/13 I suffered shoulder fractures, 3 to be exact. I was looking for a supplement to take to help with future issues I will no doubt suffer, mainly arthritis. I have it now in many areas of my body. A friend told me about magnesium and how much it has helped him deal with his pain issues related to a few bad accidents he suffered over the years. Soooo, I thought that I would try it myself. I was only taking it for a few days when I received a message from my friend informing me of some dangerous side effects that could cause severe problems for diabetics. Do you have any info regarding these risks? I stopped taking it until I learn as much as possible. I should have done that prior to taking it but I was desperate due to the pain of this injury. Thanks all…
Turmeric for pain really works like a miracle for me! Fresh or the Spice. You need to take it with a bit of healthy fat like coconut or olive oil and black pepper to unlock the full effect. You can add it to most foods, yogurt, kefir, soups, stews, even mashed potatoes! It is very healthy and helps heal. I also made a poultice of coconut oil and turmeric powder for external application. Ginger is also said to be a good pain reliever. I didn’t need to try it.
Can’t hurt anyway 🙂
You should probably resolve your diabetes first before anything else. Increase your good fats, eliminate all transfats and simple carbs from your diet. There are many good books onthis by Gary taubes, mark sisson, dr Fallon. Your cells are insulin resistant so your system needs to be brought back into balance. Type 2 diabetes is a symtom of metabolic disorder and is curable with lifestyle changes.
I do hope it wasn’t the mg you stopped! All diabetics start out deficient in mg! Oft times it helps get blood sugar numbers back within range all by itself. Get thee to a Functional Medicine practitioner.
I have osteoporosis all over my body real bad. I hurt so bad I dont have the words to explain it. I also have fibromyalgia amongst a host of other conditions. But almost 2 yrs ago I notice my hair falling out. On the pillow, in the shower, in the comb. Coming out in a very noticable way. I take supplements, too many to name and what I take them for. But it took until a few monthes ago to find out I was magnesium deficient. Many women getting a ‘bald spot’ is probably magnesium defidient. Then I read on 1 of my medicine reports from the pharmacy that it depletes magnesium! So I now make sure I take magnesium daily and eat foods weekly that are rich in magnesium!
Hair grew back on a bald patch on my head after I applied coconut oil to it for some time.
Look up a couple of posts I made a comment about turmeric for pain.
I suffer from arthritis and fibromyalgia also so thanks for this information.
Look up ‘hyperparathyroidism’ if you haven’t already. Osteoporosis can be cured and the lost bone density substantially restored by getting a potential overactive parathyroid tumor removed.
I hope your supplementation is supervised by a Functional Medicine practitioner or Naturopath. You don’t sound like you are getting appropriate medical/nutritional advice.
This is gr8 information ,as these symptoms are so common .People above 50 definately suffer from this. Regards
t
Soybean should not be on the list… Unless fermented and non-GMO.
Just have to respond to the "we get too much calcium in our diets" from Gary Hutch. I've been part of a two year cancer research project working directly with a nutritionist and lab work every other month, as well as recently getting all of my levels checked because I donated a kidney in May and my doctor wanted baseline levels on everything, including magnesium, potassium and calcium. Most women need to work at getting enough calcium in their diets. (Especially people like me who are lactose intolerant and don't do cheese or milk.) I have seen elderly woman with severe osteoporosis. NOT fun. – K. Archibald
Chlorella is a great source of magnesium.
I believe too much of anything is or can be harmful. Seek balance. All things are interconnected and work together. I also believe in slowly building up dosages.
deficiencia de Magnesio
Excellent article, as usual. Thanks for the information! Please work with an editor to fix the errors though because it is hard to take you seriously as a professional when you have multiple typos and mistakes.
I suffered from tiredness, memoryloss, uncertainty, tremor, internal trembling, etc. My friend recommended magnesium supplements; and in a short time I started feeling on top of the world again. My memory and confidence are restored!
Taking a bath in Epsom salts, which is very high in magnesium is a fast way to get magnesium into the body. If you don't want to take a bath in it, soak your feet in a tub of about a 1/2 cup of the salts and, warm water. I also juice using foods that will not interfere with iodine uptake for the slow thyroid. You can look up goitrogenic foods or, Hypothyroidism. I also get a B-12 shot. Keeping my body alkaline is why my arthritis is no longer mine. Great website!
my thyroid slow too. What do you take?
Yes, Magnesium is critical supplement that has been ignored. But along with Mg, we also are severely deficient in Boron. The parathyroid gland needs boron to balance systemic calcium-magnesium. With low boron, the parathyroid raises blood levels of calcium – which you can't possibly satisfy with supplements – so where does your body get the calcium? From your bones, joints and teeth! Take your magnesium with a bit of boron for better metabolic results. A great read by biochemist & nutrionist, Walter Last: http://www.health-science-spirit.com/borax.htm
Sorry, I didn't notice the last paragraph,so, uh, nevermind!
Is there a clinical test that you recommend to determine magnesium levels in the body and what is the appropriate range?
aim for 6 optimal 6.5 get it done through request a test. for a rbc test not blood serum that is useless. no need for a dr. as most wont no what that is anyway.
RBC magnesium is a better way to test for tissue magnesium levels. Serum magnesium is fairly useless.
Well, magnesium deficiency causes a toxic increase of calcium. Too much calcium will cause heart failure. We get too much calcium in our diets. You really need to get this right, because your life depends on it. Calcium is a slow acting poison and excess is a predictor to coronary heart disease events. Magnesium dissolves calcium that would otherwise lodge in the body such as joints and HEART and LUNGS. Calcium is acidic, Magnesium is alkaline. The idea of “overdose” is about zero or even less than zero!
We are ALL deficient of magnesium. There is a reason and all of this is explained in “Transdermal Magnesium Therapy” by Dr. Mark Sircus. It is ALL documented with 39 pages of endnotes that can be easily verified and it will change your world, believe me! I am 73 and my wife is 70 and we are told we never looked better and we sure do feel better! All my children and their families on this therapy and are like us, fit and healthy.
We are ALL deficient in Magnesium and it truly is a miracle mineral and we have ALL been misinformed in our lifetimes about THE most IMPORTANT mineral that we need. AND, it is REALLY cheap and easy to absorb. Don’t let an uninformed comment scare you about this! GET THIS BOOK!! Then you will see why!
The 'signs' of magnesium deficiency are the same as the signs of almost any systemic illness. Therefore, because the NHANES series (in depth, population-based nutrition study of the American people) shows that two-thirds of the population consumes a magnesium-poor diet, supplementation is prudent. 300mg of magnesium oxide daily at dinner would go along way toward mitigating our universally low magnesium intake. A low magnesium intake is associated with asthma, pulmonary disease, migraine, osteoporosis, ischemic heart disease, sudden death, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, PMS, and assorted other maladies that I can't recall just now. mag oxide is great for poopin but that is all you need maltate, glycinate oxide is poorly absorbed it is only 4%.
I tell my patients to use any form BUT the oxide. Some people are magnesium deficient but yet are poor absorbers…even the slightest dose of oral magnesium gives them diarrhea, and yet their RBC magnesium is way low. These people need to use transdermal, IM, or IV magnesium.

Also, metals compete for absorption (i.e. calcium, zinc, potassium, magnesium). Supplementation with one can affect the other.
Careful here. The signs for deficiency are similar to the signs for overdose for magnesium.
I thought they said you can’t overdose on magnesium ?
